A brief history of Kothala Chakalackal Family. Valayil Shri Thoma Chacko (Kuttychettan) published a book titled “Chakalackal Kudumbhacharitram” in 1974. This book gives valuable information about the ancestry and growth of Chakalackal family. According to the book: Pullolickal family originated as a branch of Chakalackal family of Kothala. Mathunni and Thommi of Athirampuzha Chakalackal family went in search of agricultural land and came to Paadathu, in Meenadom and settled there. They were awarded the title, "Paadathu Manavalanmar" by the then King for their service to the Kingdom. It is believed that their forefathers earlier went to Kothamangalam in search of fertile land. Later from Meenadom Padathuveetil, one Mathunni came to Kothala Chakalackal and his brother Thommi went to Kangazha Kothappalli and settled there. After a few generations of Kothala Chakalackal Mathunni, one Mathunni Mathunni is known. His wife was Mariamma. They had two sons, (A) Mathunni and (B) Kuruvilla. Elder son, Mathunni is the forefather of Pullolickal family while Kuruvilla continued in the Chakalackal family. The descendants of Kuruvilla are now in five families. They are (1) Chakalackal, (2) Thathampallil, (3) Kannamthanam, (4) Valayil and (5) Chalil. |
I will now summarize the salient points about the Pullolickal Family’s past and bring us to the present time. The original Chakkalackal Family at Athirampuzha, Kerala, is the “stem” from which 3 branches emerged (the root goes way back to St. Thomas’ and Vasco De Gamma’s time). These are the Changanacherry Chakkalackal, the Kottayam Chakkalayil, and the Kothala Chakkalackal families. The Athiampuzha and Changanacherry families follow the Catholic faith, the Kottayam family follows the Marthoma faith, and the Kothala family follows the Syrian Orthodox faith. The annual Family Meeting (Kudumbhayogam) of Kothala Chakkalackal (the root of the Pullolickal family) is well-attended. Members of the “stem” families also take part in the proceedings. For the 2008 Family Meeting held at Kumaly, many members from far off places like Iratty in the northern part of the Kerala State also took part. That Meeting was especially interesting to me, since I have been selected as the Recipient of the Valayil Thoma Chacko Memorial Award for 2008 (I was really moved by this event because my father used to talk very high about Mr. Valayil Thoma Chacko who was the founder of the Kudumbhayogam). The next Kudumbhayogam is scheduled for 1st May 2009 at the residence of my brother Dr. P.T.Kurien. |
